Left - by taking the relevant section of the two overlaid maps from the previous page, and adding a plan and site boundary of the old house (and drawn to the correct scale), it is possible to see the precise location and orientation of the house in relation to the modern buildings

Below - this picture is of the view from Lancaster Road showing the datum point in relation to the modern buildings (see arrow on map, left)

As mentioned in the Methodology section, it was considered useful to utilise additional information provided by local landmarks to further verify the exact position of and orientation of the old house. The picture below shows an extract from the Ordnance Survey (OS) map revised in 1913-14 and published in 1916. From this one can see that the southwest corner of the house plot was in a direct line with the pavement line of the stretch of Lancaster Road to the east of St Mark’s Road whilst the northwest corner of the old house plot aligns with the rear extensions elevations of the houses along that same road and the northwest corner of the old house (i.e. the building itself) aligns with the rear elevations. As that part of Lancaster Road remains today as it was at the time, one can project this onto a contemporary map to confirm positioning.

Above - in the upper drawing, a fourth line has been added which follows the line of the old house and plot from northwest to southeast (and parallel with the houses in Lancaster Road). Adding a similar line to the modern map, at the same angle and distance from the pavement line on the east side of St Mark’s Road, it is possible to see the size and orientation of the old house as it relates to the modern buildings.
